About Decoupage

,,The word decoupage is from the French decouper 'to cut'. It is thought to have originated in Italy in the late 17th early 18th centuries as a way of imitating styles of decorating furniture such as inlay, marquetry, Chinese lacquerwork and furniture painting. Decoupage imitated these highly skilled crafts at a fraction of the cost or the originals. Decoupage was very popular in the late 17th and early 18th centuries in France and England, mainly as a hobby for young ladies. It was popular with the court of Marie Antoinette who apparently cut up original paintings by Boucher and Fragonard - reason enough to send her to the guillotine! In England it was considered an 'accomplishment', along with sewing, piano playing, singing and modern languages and is mentioned in Jane Austen's Pride & Prejudice when Mr Bingley lists 'covering screens' as one of the pursuits of 'a truly accomplished young lady'. The screens were covered with paper cutouts and lacquered.After disappearing as a hobby decoupage experienced a revival in the middle of the 20th century, especially in the United States, Australia and South Africa. Some of the most amazing decoupage was done by Hiram Manning and his mother Maybelle in the USA in the 1940's and 1950's, and has inspired many decoupeurs since. It is rapidly catching on in the UK. Decoupage

,,Decoupage is a technique used to decorate furniture and articles such as boxes, lamp bases, firescreens, vases, tea trays, decorative plates, and just about anything you like, using paper cutouts which are then sealed and varnished. Numerous coats of varnish are applied to achieve a level and smooth finish.
Additional techniques can also be used to finish the article, such as crackle varnishing and ageing, gold leafing and the addition of beads, mother of pearl and iridescent paints, to achieve stunning effects.
Every decoupeur has his/her own style and methods of working. My favourite sources for decoupage are the numerous books containing black and white drawings of original designs used to create decorative architectural features, plasterwork and metal work of the Rococo, Queen Anne, the Neo-classical periods. These are available from the Dover Bookshop . I like using photocopies of pre-Raphaelite reproductions, Arthur Rackham’s fairies, flowery wrapping papers and designs from the Art Nouveau period.
